Is Teak Wood sustainable and eco-friendly? Can you buy ethically sourced teak furniture and teak wood gifts? This and more, Affinity Wholesale answer some questions about teak wood.

Teak wood comes from the teak tree (Botanical name: Tectona grandis) The teak tree is a tall, deciduous tree native to south and southeast Asia, mainly Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Sri Lanka, but is naturalised and cultivated in many countries in Africa and the Caribbean. Growing up to 50 metres (164 ft) in optimal conditions and living for up to 100 years.

Teak trees still grow wild in ancient Asian forests as well as now being farmed sustainably in managed teak wood plantations. Affinity Wholesale responsibly sources all our teak wood only from managed farmed teak plantations.

Teak Wood Furniture and Wood Carvings That last A Lifetime

Teak is a popular wood with artisan furniture makers and wood carving craftspeople because it has many desirable attributes like strength, beauty and versatility. Affinity Wholesale sources furniture and wood carving art decor from craftspeople with this in mind. The teak carvings and furniture are durable to withstand outdoor use with appropriate winter maintenance of the teak wood.

  • Strength

Teak is very hard as far as wood goes, on the Janka Hardness scale of wood, it is 1,070 lbf (4,740 N). It is strong and durable, able to withstand extremes of heat and cold. This makes it an extremely good and outstanding wood for any outdoor furniture, it also means that it provides a lifetime (and beyond!) of use for indoors.

The durability of the wood means that it is unlikely to suffer from rotting or many other afflictions that can attack other softer woods. The durability of teak wood is world-renowned.

Using the right type of teak – good quality wood with perhaps a teak oil maintenance routine – can result in beautiful, long-lasting solid wood furniture and wood carvings that can take whatever you and your home (or the scorching sun) can throw at them.

  • Beauty

The natural colour and grain of teak wood make it one of the more attractive woods for artisan woodcarvers and furniture craftspeople to work with, creating stunning masterpieces for people who know and understand what quality and beauty is.

Outdoor teak wood can be left to the elements and become a graceful silver-grey colour, a gorgeously aged “au naturel” look. The teak takes on a stately and refined look, a little how my own ideal is with looks and ageing. The teak that is used for indoor purposes is often oiled to retain its warm golden colour.

Its sheer strength is a real bonus for furniture designers, who can produce a range of pieces that may not be viable using other, softer woods, which often means that you have a wider range of choice in artisan teak furniture and wood carvings than in many of the other woods.

  • Versatility

The natural benefits of teak wood; strength, durability, warm colour, resistance to insects or other damaging elements, make it an extremely adaptable wood. Its high water-resistant properties and tendency not to splinter have made it a favourite for boat builders for thousands of years and it has since been used for a wide range of both indoor and outdoor furniture and wood carvings.

Timeless Teak Style

From tables to cabinets and teak wood carvings, teak is versatile, it has the resilience and pliability that many skilled artisan furniture makers are looking for today.

The natural oil content of teak is exceptionally high and helps give the wood its weather-resistant qualities. Because of this high natural teak oil concentration within the wood itself, teak outdoor furniture and wood carvings can pretty much be left outside, season after season with little to no care.

It is quite reasonable to expect that a piece of quality teak furniture or wood carving will be the very last exterior furnishing that you will ever buy—the quality is that good, certainly a gold standard amongst wood!

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Teak Wood Furniture Ethics

Yes, Affinity Wholesale teak wood is sustainable. The teak we use for our furniture and wood carvings and gifts doesn’t come from natural forests; it comes from legal, regulated plantations. Plantation teak is a renewable resource as it’s farmed to produce a sustainable supply. Leftovers from teak plantation production can be recycled or returned to the earth without damaging the environment.

Is teak endangered?

Teak is sustainable, renewable, and not endangered. Teak is not listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Not all teak is eco-friendly or sustainably sourced, hence the bad press teak has had in the past. The teak wood Affinity Wholesale use comes from ecologically managed and sustainable plantations, either in Thailand, Indonesia or India.

Avoid Myanma (Burma) Teak

You can find cheaper teak furniture from some sellers that are from “grey market” trees cut down illegally from non-regenerating resources, for instance, teak from countries that have either no or very little control over the destruction of ancient and natural teak forests, like what has been happening in Myanma by the military junta. In efforts to boost the junta’s money reserves after violently oppressing the Myanma population, there has been mass destruction of the ancient teak forests.

We think you should avoid all teak sourced from unknown or dubious origins for obvious reasons.

Wholesale Reclaimed Teak Wood

We also use reclaimed teak wood in some of our “reclaimed wood” products that you can find on our website if you search the titles and descriptions. The reclaimed teak we use comes from many different sources, often old boats, wood carts and houses. Affinity Wholesale wholeheartedly supports the upcycling of wood, that is to say, the creative reuse of teak where possible.
